Taliban to Afghan Teachers: Stop Classes or Die

KABUL, Afghanistan -- The Taliban gunmen who murdered two teachers in eastern Afghanistan early Saturday were only following their rules: Teachers receive a warning, then a beating, and if they continue to teach must be killed.

The new list of 30 rules, decided on during a high Taliban meeting in September or October and since circulated over the Internet, span from the organizational -- no jihad equipment may be used for personal means -- to the health conscious -- militants are not supposed to smoke.

Rule No. 24 forbids anyone to work as a teacher "under the current puppet regime, because this strengthens the system of the infidels." One rule later, No. 25, says teachers who ignore Taliban warnings will be killed.

Taliban militants early Saturday broke into a house in the eastern province of Kunar, killing a family of five, including two sisters who were teachers.

The women had been warned in a letter to quit teaching, said Gulam Ullah Wekar, the provincial education director. Their mother, grandmother and a male relative were also slain in the attack.

The two sisters brought to 20 the number of teachers killed in Taliban attacks this year, said Education Ministry spokesman Zuhur Afghan. He said 198 schools have been burned down this year, up from about 150 last year.

New Democrat Sen. From NJ, Robert Menendez, Under Grand Jury Investigation!

A federal grand jury looking into Senator Robert Menendez’s real estate dealings with a nonprofit agency has begun hearing testimony from witnesses associated with the agency, according to a lawyer for one of the witnesses.

The investigation stems from a 1993 lease deal in which Mr. Menendez rented a building that housed his former law office in Union City, N.J., to the North Hudson Community Action Corporation, an antipoverty agency whose former director was a large contributor to Mr. Menendez.

Over the next decade, Mr. Menendez, as a member of Congress, helped the agency win millions of dollars in federal aid. He also helped it obtain a designation as a federally recognized health care provider, opening the door for additional aid. He continued to lease the building to the agency until he sold it in 2003.

Churlish Congresswoman McKinney Bows Out By Introducing Bill To Impeach Bush

WASHINGTON - In what was likely her final legislative act in Congress, outgoing Georgia Rep. Cynthia McKinney announced a bill Friday to impeach
President Bush.

The legislation has no chance of passing and serves as a symbolic parting shot not only at Bush but also at Democratic leaders. Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has made clear that she will not entertain proposals to sanction Bush and has warned the liberal wing of her party against making political hay of impeachment.

McKinney, a Democrat who drew national headlines in March when she struck a Capitol police officer, has long insisted that Bush was never legitimately elected. In introducing her legislation in the final hours of the current Congress, she said Bush had violated his oath of office to defend the Constitution and the nation's laws.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson: 'I Am Running' in 2008

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is expected to formally file papers to form a presidential exploratory committee in January. But today he told FOX News "I am running," as he described the professional and personal experiences that he believes have prepared him for the job.

"I've dealt with the issues that are very important today — national security, immigration and energy," Richardson said in an interview with FOX News' Carl Cameron.

Richardson was secretary of energy and later U.N. ambassador during the Clinton administration. In addition to his diplomatic experience, Richardson believes that his Hispanic heritage will be an advantage in his campaign for the presidency.

"I am Hispanic, which I believe is an asset," Richardson said. "But I'm not running as an Hispanic, I am running as an American who is proud to be Hispanic."

Somalia Town Threatens to Behead People Who Don't Pray 5 Times Daily

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Residents of a southern Somalia town who do not pray five times a day will be beheaded, an official said Wednesday, adding the edict will be implemented in three days.

Shops, tea houses and other public places in Bulo Burto, about 124 miles northeast of the capital, Mogadishu, should be closed during prayer time and no one should be on the streets, said Sheik Hussein Barre Rage, the chairman of the town's Islamic court. His court is part of a network backed by armed militiamen that has taken control of much of southern Somalia in recent months, bringing a strict interpretation of Islam that is alien to many Somalis.

Those who do not follow the prayer edict after three days have elapsed, "will definitely be beheaded according to Islamic law," Rage told The Associated Press by phone. "As Muslims we should practice Islam fully, not in part, and that is what our religion enjoins us to do."

He said the edict, which covered only Bulo Burto, was being announced over loudspeakers throughout the town.

Protests Call for Public School Exodus

Houston lawyer Bruce Shortt refers to himself as an ordinary guy who "lives in flyover country." But he has an unusual pastime that has attracted both critics and supporters: He's working to encourage parents to "leave behind" public schools.

Shortt said if parents take their Christian beliefs seriously, they will do everything possible to ensure their children get a thoroughly Christian education. A growing segment of the faith community is joining Shortt's call for an exodus, saying the public school system is hostile to their values and unresponsive to their concerns.

They claim to be responsible for most of the 1 million children nationwide now being homeschooled.

"As Christian parents, we have an obligation to provide our children with a Christian education, but unfortunately, Christians have developed a government school habit," Shortt explained. "The purpose of the resolutions is to force parents and pastors to confront our disobedience in the education of our children and its consequences.

Government schools are destroying our children spiritually, morally, and intellectually. We need to create a new public education system--a system that is 'public' in that it is open to all, but that is owned and controlled by parents

Clinton’s Talks With Democrats May Signal Bid for President

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has begun a calculated series of meetings with top New York Democratic officials to signal that she is likely to run for the presidency in 2008 and to ask for their support if she does, according to one state Democratic official who spoke with her and two others who have been briefed on her plans.

Senator Clinton met last week with Charles B. Rangel, the dean of the New York Congressional delegation, in what her advisers said was an effort to meet with most New York Congressional Democrats by the end of this month to discuss her plans.

On Friday, she also spoke with Herman D. Farrell Jr., the chairman of the State Democratic Party, Mr. Farrell said, and she plans to meet with Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer as early as today. Mr. Farrell confirmed that Senator Clinton briefed him on her 2008 intentions; Mr. Rangel declined to describe their conversation.

Democrats Seek Voters By Granting Blanket Immunity for Illegals

Congress will approve an immigration bill that will grant citizenship rights to most of the 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens in the U.S. after Democrats take control next month, predict both sides on Capitol Hill.

While Republicans have been largely splintered on the issue of immigration reform, Democrats have been fairly unified behind the principle that the illegals currently in the country should get citizenship rights without having to first leave the country.

"Years of dawdling have worsened our border security and made it harder to fix this broken system," said Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, the Vermont Democrat who will lead the Judiciary Committee next year. "We should not let partisan politics and intolerance continue to delay and derail effective reform."
Democrats in both chambers say they will start with some form of legislation first drafted by Sens. John McCain, Arizona Republican, and Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, which was the basis for the bill that was approved earlier this year by the Senate.
